The successful PhD applicant will work with multiple scale (from drones to satellite) remote sensing of shrub encroachment processes and treeline dynamics in tundra ecosystems. The candidate is expected to have skills in remote sensing and machine learning. The position entails both office work and field work.

The UEF NordBorN team welcomes candidates with background in geography, ecology, environmental sciences, geoinformatics and computer sciences. The position will provide a unique opportunity to be part of a large, active international team and participate in project meetings in different countries over the course of the project.

The PhD researcher will be based at the Joensuu campus of the University of Eastern Finland, at the Department of Geography and Historical Studies, and will work closely with Timo Kumpula and Miguel Villoslada and other members of the Digital Geosciences research group.

Mariana Verdonen

Mariana Verdonen is defending her PhD on Friday March 22, 2024 at 12:00 EET.

The doctoral dissertation of Mariana Verdonen, entitled Periglacial landscape dynamics: coupled analysis of a changing Arctic using remote sensing and field observations will be examined at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies. The opponent in the public examination will be Associate Professor Heather Reese of the University of Gothenburg, and the custos will be Professor Timo Kumpula of the University of Eastern Finland.

You can follow the defense online, and you can also read Mariana’s PhD thesis.

All the best from the NordBorN team for your big day Mariana!

Open NordBorN meeting at AUI

The Nordic Borealization Network (NordBorN) is a five-year project funded by NordForsk that will establish a collaboration platform across the Nordic countries to understand the implications of borealization in Nordic terrestrial ecosystems. We aim at understanding the drivers, patterns and consequences of the rapid changes occurring at higher latitudes linked to the shifts in species distributions from boreal biomes to the tundra. The NordBorN consortium includes 6 Nordic universities and 3 associated partners, but welcomes collaboration with a broader network, to establish a strong platform for scientific collaboration. One of the key emphases of NordBorN is on training the next generation of ecologists in the Nordic countries.

An open meeting will be held at the Agricultural University campus in Keldnaholt and
on Teams on Friday March 8, at 10:00. More info. Spread the news

Opin kynning á Norræna vísindanetinu NordBorN

Norrænt vísindanet NordBorN (e. The Nordic Borealization Network) er fimm ára verkefni
